Another new year. Another year of resolutions. Another 365 days of adventures. Another 8,765.81 history-making hours. Another 525,949 minutes used or wasted. Another 31,556,900 seconds that could change your life forever.
Daunting, eh? Just think what our lives would be like if we used every one of those 525,949 minutes in 2013 to better the world. Even if you took out 8 hours or 480 minutes a day for sleep, or 172,800 minutes a year, you would still have 353,149 minutes to better the world. Let's say that you don't want to spend all of your day serving others because there are other things to do. So in that case, let's take half of those minutes and devote them to those other things, such as eating, driving, cleaning, etc. You now have 176,574.5 minutes to give to better the world. Wait what's that? You work too? Oh, well then let's divide that number by two and give you 88,287.25 minutes a year to give to the world. Sounds like a big number still? Well then, let's shrink it down. 88,287.25 minutes = 1471.45 hours = 61.310416667 days = 8.7586309524 weeks = 2.0143482924 months = 0.1678623577 of a year. That means that if you spent a whopping 4 hours a day doing service, you've only spent about 17% of your year helping others. Wow. What was the other 83% spent doing? Watching TV? Playing video games? Checking Facebook?
Now I'm not saying that we should devote that much time to helping others all the time. Goodness gracious that would get extremely exhausting and we would be forgetting our own life in the process. But think of this: if you or me, as an individual, spent one hour a week helping others, whether it be through scattered acts of service or through one big act, we could contribute about 52 hours of service a year. As of 2011, it is estimated that there are 6,973,739,433 people living on the earth. If each person spent this simple 1 hour a week for the entire year helping other people, our globe would be putting together over 363,872,289,265 hours of service a year!. These billions of hours of service translate to over 41,510,400 years of service done in one year.
That is absolutely mind blowing. As a society and as a world, we can do mighty and great things that defy time. Can you imagine how the world would change? I'll leave that to you to imagine.
So I ask you this: how will you be spending your new year? Small acts of kindness can reach great distances. Let us gather together to make this world a better place in 2013.
2013 is my exordium.
I love you all. Keep being stellar.
P.S. I did all of this math, so if you find an error, please let me know! Thanks.
