Yes ladies and gents, I am no longer under the control of social networking sites that steal my time and infiltrate my brain. I am now free to do what I want, think what I want, and be what I want. In a way you could say that I am starting to live the Walden life. I am giving up things that don't contribute to my well-being and self-growth.
Why did I start this? Well I was texting my friend last night when I told him that I had some awesome pictures on Facebook that documented my trip to Alaska that he should look at. I received a quick response saying, "I actually just deleted all my social networking stuff this morning." I was surprised and shocked at the suddenness of his decision, yet I found myself respecting him even more. It takes someone with true commitment to a distraction free world to delete one's virtual life completely. So I decided to follow. I wasn't as committed or admirable. I didn't delete my account, rather I just suspended it. Let me tell you one thing. It has made all the difference.
But there are side effects. Here are a few:
1. I find myself having the sudden urge to check Facebook in my free time. Duct tape is often necessary to restrain myself... (not really, so don't freak out).
2. I format everything that is clever and funny in my life into a status in my brain.
3. I lose contact with my friends over the virtual world, but I gain better relationships with those I actually associate with.
4. There is no more Instagram. Who needs it anyways?
5. I suddenly have much more time in my life.
A few notes. Quitting Facebook is not for everyone. If you get separation anxiety easily, do not try this at home. If you live far away from everyone, say in the Alaskan bush, Facebook may be necessary for survival. Keep using it. If you do not fit under these categories I urge you to decrease your activity on social networking sites. Do not become a slave or an addict. I have seen their lives and trust me, you don't want to live like they do.
Love you all! Stay stellar.
